Appendix A. Aerial photograph of the lower half of the study area in the Clayoquot Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The study area contains primary forest not affected by any industrial activity. Major features include the main stem of the Clayoquot River flowing into Clayoquot Lake. Note the diagonal border of the two mosaiced photographs. Codes refer to the four main forest types. CS = cedar-salal forest (western red cedar with abundant salal in the understory), showing small tree crowns on south-facing slopes. HF = hemlock-fir forest (Pacific silver fir and western hemlock), showing uniform crown size and the darkest crown colors. CH = cedar-hemlock forest (western redcedar and western hemlock) showing large tree crowns and an irregular forest canopy. SS = Sitka spuce forest (Sitka spruce and western hemlock) on floodplains and terraces slightly elevated above the floodplain.
