Appendix A. A diagrammatic illustration of the distribution of events of disturbance.

A diagrammatic illustration of the distribution of events of disturbance (D) over the course of the experiment for each level of temporal variation of disturbance. T1–T7 are the times of sampling. The full experimental design includes three levels of intensity crossed with each level of temporal variation and with each of two levels of spatial extent of disturbance, with three replicate patches nested in each condition and three unmanipulated patches as controls. The variance of the intervals of time (in months) between successive disturbances is 2.8, 8.8, and 26.8 for low, medium, and high temporal variation of disturbance, respectively.
