Species were considered rare (codeR) if they occurred at densities of < 5 % in all occupied plots.
All species were identified in other vegetation surveys of these coastal dunes (Cooper 1936, Breckon and Barbour 1974, Wiedemann 1984, Peinado 2007).
Number of plots in which a species occurs at S1-S2-S3-S4-S5; to maximum 16-8-8-16-16. S1-S4 within range, S5 beyond range limit.
Perennial (P), Annual (A), Biennial (B)
Where possible, species are categorized following Cooper (1936), Breckon and Barbour (1974) and Wiedemann (1984). "Dune" species are endemic to coastal dune habitats, all others are also found in other habitats and/or substrates. "Endemic" species occur only in western North America, and only in coastal habitats if "Maritime endemic". "Widespread" species occur throughout North America (NA) and possibly on other continents. All others are endemic to regions indicated including NA or are not native to NA ("Non-indigenous").
Leontodon taraxoides (Vill.) Mérat, and Hypochaeris radicata L. were difficult to distinguish as rosettes and hence combined into one category.
Festuca rubra L. (widespread), and Festuca arundinacea Schreb (widespread, non-indigenous) were difficult to distinguish and hence combined into one category.
