Appendix A (Table A1). References are based on Frazier et al. (2006) and Deutsch et al. (2008). Though we have not explicitly tested for phylogenetic independence here, previous studies have demonstrated that these patterns are not generally a result of phylogenetic non-independence (Frazier et al. 2006, Deutsch et al. 2008).  We are also limited by the number of studies showing thermal dependency of population growth rates (for example, we have only six species in strictly tropical locations between 23°S and 23°N latitude), though other analyses using different metrics of physiological tolerance have demonstrated the general pattern of narrower tolerance breadths at low latitudes (e.g. Sunday et al. 2010). Global studies of climate change impacts would therefore benefit significantly from increased efforts to collect data in the tropics and, in the context of direct warming impacts, ecophysiological studies would be especially welcome and helpful.
