Extended description of fire history

The most open plots were in IBGE (plots 1 and 2) which were burned at approximately 2-year intervals until 1973 and then protected from fire from 1973–1994 with the establishment of the IBGE reserve but were burned regularly (every ~ 2 years) as part of a fire experiment since 1994. Plot 3 differed from plots 1 and 2 because it was not burned regularly since 1994 and has only been occasionally burned (3 times), with the most recent fire in 2005. Plots 4 and 5 were last burned in the early 1990s and have not burned for at least 15 years. Plots 6 and 7 have not burned at least since the formation of the reserves (>40 years) and were already in dense woody cover condition before the foundation of the reserve. Plot 6 and 7 are hypothesized to have been fire protected since at least the 1960s and 1950s, respectively (Dias, personal communication).
